About Babich Wines
Founded in 1916, Babich Wines is one of New Zealand’s oldest family-owned wineries, with more than a century of winemaking heritage. Established by Croatian immigrant Josip Babich, the winery began with a simple passion for making quality wine and has grown into a respected New Zealand wine producer with a strong international presence.
Today, Babich remains proudly family-owned and continues to combine generations of winemaking experience with innovation, careful vineyard management and a deep respect for New Zealand’s unique wine regions.
The winery sources grapes from some of New Zealand’s most renowned wine-growing areas, including Marlborough and Hawke’s Bay. Each region offers distinctive growing conditions, allowing Babich to craft wines that express the character of their vineyards while maintaining the freshness, purity and elegance associated with New Zealand wine.
Babich has a particularly strong reputation for wines from Hawke’s Bay, one of New Zealand’s leading regions for premium red wines. The winery’s vineyards in the Gimblett Gravels area provide an exceptional foundation for varieties such as Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, producing wines with depth, structure and distinctive regional character.
With a philosophy centred on family, place and quality, Babich continues to honour its heritage while looking towards the future. From its beginnings in 1916 to its place on the international wine stage today, Babich Wines represents the enduring spirit of New Zealand family winemaking.
