Craggy Range – The Spirit of New Zealand Terroir

Craggy Range is one of New Zealand’s most respected wine producers, renowned for creating distinctive, terroir-driven wines from some of the country’s finest vineyard sites. Founded in 1998 by Terry Peabody and renowned winemaker Steve Smith MW, the estate has built an international reputation for expressing the unique character of Hawke’s Bay and other leading New Zealand wine regions.

A Vision for New Zealand Wine

Craggy Range was established with a clear ambition: to create exceptional wines from outstanding vineyard sites while allowing the character of each region to shine through. The estate’s home vineyard, Te Muna Road, is located in the Gimblett Gravels of Hawke’s Bay, one of New Zealand’s most distinctive wine-growing areas.

The winery takes a site-focused approach to viticulture and winemaking, with careful attention to soil, climate, vine health and individual vineyard character.

The Terroir of Hawke’s Bay

Hawke’s Bay is one of New Zealand’s premier wine regions, known for its warm, dry climate and diverse soils. The region is particularly well suited to varieties such as Syrah, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Craggy Range’s Gimblett Gravels vineyard is especially important to the estate. Its free-draining gravel soils and warm growing conditions provide an ideal environment for producing concentrated yet elegant red wines with distinctive mineral character and fine structure.

Iconic New Zealand Wines

Craggy Range is particularly recognised for its Te Muna Road Sauvignon Blanc, Te Kahu and Le Sol Syrah, as well as its prestigious Sophia Gimblett Gravels and Aroha Pinot Noir.

Le Sol Syrah is one of the estate’s flagship wines, showcasing the elegance, spice and structure that can be achieved from Hawke’s Bay Syrah. Sophia expresses the richness and complexity of the Gimblett Gravels, while Aroha Pinot Noir reflects the cool-climate character of Martinborough’s Wairarapa region.

Sustainability, Precision and Place

Craggy Range places strong emphasis on sustainable viticulture and the preservation of vineyard biodiversity. The estate’s approach combines careful vineyard management with precise winemaking, allowing the natural character of each site to remain at the centre of the wines.

From elegant Hawke’s Bay Syrah to vibrant Sauvignon Blanc and refined Martinborough Pinot Noir, Craggy Range represents the diversity, purity and distinctive terroir of New Zealand wine.
