The 2012 Sami-Odi ‘Baby Tui’ Syrah is a rare, early cult release from Sami-Odi, the highly influential Barossa producer known for redefining modern Australian Syrah through precision, restraint, and site expression. This bottling is one of the most historically significant wines in the range, made from meticulously selected parcels of old-vine fruit from the legendary Hoffmann/Dallwitz vineyard in Ebenezer.

The 2012 vintage is widely regarded as a standout year for this cuvée, producing fruit of exceptional purity, structure, and natural balance. In contrast to many Barossa Shiraz wines of its era, Baby Tui was crafted with a distinctly elegant, cool-toned, and almost Northern Rhône-influenced style, emphasising lift, detail, and savoury complexity over sheer power.

Winemaking is minimal and highly hands-on: whole-bunch fermentation, wild yeast, gentle extraction, and maturation in seasoned French oak, with no excessive new oak influence. The philosophy is to preserve vineyard identity and capture a transparent expression of site and season.

The bouquet is intensely aromatic and evolving, showing black cherry, ripe plum, and dark raspberry, alongside lifted floral notes of violet, rose petal, and lavender. With bottle age, deeper savoury layers of black olive, cured meat, spice, earth, and dried herbs emerge, adding complexity and depth.

On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, silky, and beautifully structured, with refined tannins and a surprising sense of energy even in maturity. Flavours of dark berries, plum, and red fruit are interwoven with savoury spice, earth, and mineral undertones, giving the wine both richness and finesse.

The finish is long, seamless, and gently savoury, carrying notes of dark fruit, floral lift, spice, and earthy complexity. Now entering full maturity, the 2012 Baby Tui offers tertiary complexity, silky texture, and a harmonious balance between fruit and savoury development.

A landmark early release from Sami-Odi, the 2012 Baby Tui Syrah stands as one of the defining wines of the producer’s legacy, showcasing the beginning of a new, more refined era of Barossa Syrah.
