The 2016 Yalumba The Caley Cabernet Shiraz is one of Australia’s most acclaimed luxury red wines and the flagship release from Yalumba. Widely regarded as one of the finest expressions of the classic Australian Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz blend, The Caley unites the elegance of Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon with the power and richness of Barossa Valley Shiraz. The 2016 vintage is considered one of the greatest releases in the wine’s history, earning widespread critical acclaim and exceptional scores from leading international critics.

Named after Fred Caley Smith, an adventurous member of the Hill-Smith family, The Caley represents the pinnacle of Yalumba’s winemaking philosophy. The 2016 vintage was sourced from Yalumba’s prestigious Ming D Cabernet vineyard in Coonawarra alongside exceptional old-vine Shiraz vineyards in the Barossa Valley and Eden Valley. The blend was matured for approximately 21 months in French oak barriques, including a proportion of new oak, enhancing complexity while preserving fruit purity and vineyard character.

The bouquet is intensely aromatic and sophisticated, revealing layers of blackcurrant, cassis, blackberry, dark cherry, and plum, intertwined with notes of cedar, tobacco leaf, graphite, iodine, liquorice, dried herbs, and fine spice. Additional nuances of violet, bay leaf, dark chocolate, and earth emerge with time in the glass, highlighting the wine’s remarkable complexity.

On the palate, the wine is powerful yet exceptionally refined. Concentrated flavours of blackcurrant, blackberry, cassis, dark cherry, and plum are supported by silky, finely structured tannins and vibrant acidity. Cabernet Sauvignon contributes precision, structure, and longevity, while Shiraz provides plush texture, depth, and generosity. The result is a seamless and harmonious wine of extraordinary balance and elegance.

The finish is remarkably long and persistent, lingering with notes of dark fruits, cedar, graphite, cocoa, spice, ironstone, and savoury complexity. Although already impressive, the wine possesses exceptional ageing potential and is expected to evolve gracefully over the next 20–30 years or more.
