The 2019 Bass Phillip Reserve Pinot Noir is one of Australia’s most iconic cool-climate Pinot Noirs, produced by Bass Phillip in Victoria’s Gippsland region. Considered the flagship wine of the estate, the Reserve is only produced in exceptional vintages and represents the highest expression of Bass Phillip’s biodynamic, low-intervention winemaking philosophy.
The 2019 vintage is widely regarded as a landmark year in Gippsland, delivering ideal ripening conditions with excellent balance between fruit intensity, natural acidity, and tannin finesse. The result is a wine of extraordinary depth, perfume, and structure.
Sourced from the estate’s best vineyard parcels, the fruit was hand-harvested and rigorously sorted before fermentation. A significant portion of whole-bunch inclusion was used to enhance aromatic lift, complexity, and structural definition. The wine was then matured in high-quality French oak barrels, with restrained new oak to preserve purity and site expression.
The bouquet is intensely perfumed and highly layered, revealing aromas of dark cherry, black raspberry, wild strawberry, and red plum, interwoven with notes of violet, rose petal, star anise, cinnamon spice, and subtle clove. With time in the glass, deeper savoury nuances emerge, including forest floor, truffle, dried herbs, mushroom, and earthy minerality.
On the palate, the wine is powerful yet refined, combining concentration with remarkable elegance. Flavours of black cherry, raspberry, plum skin, and dark berries are supported by fine-grained, silky tannins and vibrant acidity. The texture is dense and multi-layered, showing both intensity and finesse in equal measure.
The finish is exceptionally long, complex, and persistent, with lingering notes of dark fruit, spice, floral perfume, forest floor, and savoury earth tones. Now entering a beautiful stage of maturity, the wine is beginning to reveal tertiary complexity while retaining excellent cellaring potential for further development over the next 10–20 years.
A benchmark Australian Pinot Noir, the 2019 Bass Phillip Reserve stands among the most highly regarded and collectible Pinot Noirs ever produced in the Southern Hemisphere.
