The 2019 Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon is a benchmark Margaret River Cabernet from the iconic estate Moss Wood, one of Australia’s most respected producers of long-lived, classical Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is a precise expression of the Wilyabrup subregion, where maritime influence and gravelly soils consistently produce structured, age-worthy reds.

The 2019 vintage in Margaret River is widely regarded as a cool, elegant year, producing wines of refinement, fine tannin structure, and excellent ageing potential. At Moss Wood, the fruit was harvested from meticulously managed estate vineyards and includes a traditional Bordeaux-style blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon with small portions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot for complexity and structure.

Fermentation takes place in small open-top fermenters with careful hand plunging, followed by extended maceration for tannin integration. The wine is then matured in French oak barriques, with a modest proportion of new oak, allowing fruit purity and structure to remain at the forefront.

The bouquet is deeply aromatic and layered, showing blackcurrant (cassis), blackberry, and redcurrant, supported by classic Margaret River Cabernet notes of cedar, tobacco leaf, bay leaf, graphite, and violets. Subtle secondary complexity emerges with dark chocolate, dried herbs, and earthy spice.

On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, tightly structured, and finely balanced, with concentrated flavours of cassis, black plum, and dark berries. The tannins are firm yet polished, giving the wine its signature backbone, while vibrant acidity provides length and precision.

The finish is long and composed, lingering with notes of blackcurrant, cedar, tobacco, spice, and savoury earth. While approachable with decanting, the 2019 Moss Wood Cabernet is built for serious cellaring and will continue to evolve over 15–25+ years, developing greater savoury depth and tertiary complexity over time.
