The 2019 Penfolds St Henri Shiraz is a classic, time-honoured expression of Australian Shiraz produced by Penfolds. Unlike many flagship reds, St Henri is defined by its absence of new oak, instead maturing in large, seasoned vats. This approach preserves pure fruit expression and allows the wine to develop a distinctive, savoury complexity over time.

Often seen as a stylistic counterpoint to Grange, St Henri is known for its plush fruit, earthy depth, and slow-evolving character. The 2019 vintage continues this tradition, showing a rich yet restrained style that balances generosity with finesse.

The blend is predominantly Shiraz with a small proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon in some years, contributing structure and complexity. After fermentation, the wine is matured for around 12 months in large, old oak vats, resulting in minimal oak influence and a strong emphasis on fruit purity and texture.

The bouquet is layered and inviting, revealing aromas of blackberry, dark plum, mulberry, and black cherry, alongside savoury notes of earth, leather, dried herbs, spice, and mocha-like richness. With time in the glass, more tertiary complexity emerges, including hints of ironstone, cocoa, and forest floor.

On the palate, the wine is generous, smooth, and medium to full-bodied, with soft, flowing tannins and a supple texture. Flavours of dark fruits, plum, and berry compote are supported by savoury undertones and a distinctive earthy character that defines St Henri’s identity.

The finish is long, gentle, and persistent, with lingering notes of dark fruit, spice, earth, and subtle savoury complexity. While approachable in its youth, the 2019 St Henri is built for long-term cellaring and will continue to evolve for 20–30+ years, gaining additional layers of savoury nuance and complexity.

A benchmark of traditional Australian winemaking, the 2019 St Henri Shiraz remains one of Penfolds’ most distinctive and enduring styles.
