The 2020 Catena Zapata Malbec Alta is a premium high-altitude Malbec from Mendoza, Argentina, produced by the iconic Catena Zapata winery—widely regarded as a pioneer of modern Argentine fine wine. The “Alta” range represents carefully selected vineyard blocks at elevated altitudes, where cooler temperatures and intense sunlight create wines of exceptional concentration, freshness, and aromatic precision.

The 2020 vintage in Mendoza delivered excellent balance, with a long, even ripening season that preserved natural acidity while developing deep colour and flavour intensity. This resulted in a Malbec with both power and refinement, showcasing the unique expression of high-altitude terroir.

Fruit is sourced from select parcels across the Uco Valley and Luján de Cuyo, including some of the estate’s highest and oldest vineyard sites. Fermentation takes place in small vessels with careful extraction, followed by maturation in French oak barrels (a portion new oak), which adds structure and subtle spice while preserving fruit purity.

The bouquet is expressive and complex, showing blackberry, plum, and black cherry, layered with notes of violet, lavender, and crushed blueberry. Underlying aromas of cocoa, espresso, tobacco leaf, and sweet baking spice add depth and sophistication.

On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, concentrated, and finely structured, with rich dark fruit flavours supported by firm yet polished tannins. Vibrant acidity from high-altitude vineyards gives lift and balance, preventing heaviness and enhancing precision.

The finish is long, elegant, and persistent, with lingering notes of dark berries, cocoa, spice, and floral minerality. While approachable with decanting, the 2020 Catena Alta Malbec has excellent ageing potential, evolving gracefully over 10–15+ years.
