The 2020 Ata Rangi Pinot Noir is an iconic Martinborough Pinot Noir from one of New Zealand’s most celebrated wineries. Produced from the estate’s oldest vineyards on the famed Martinborough Terrace, this flagship wine is internationally recognised for its remarkable elegance, purity, and longevity, consistently ranking among the Southern Hemisphere’s finest Pinot Noirs.

The 2020 vintage is regarded as an exceptional release. A near-perfect growing season with ideal temperatures, balanced rainfall, and pristine fruit allowed Ata Rangi to craft a wine of outstanding concentration, harmony, and site expression. The blend is sourced from six mature vineyard parcels located within 500 metres of the winery, showcasing the complexity and consistency of the Martinborough Terrace.

Hand-harvested grapes are carefully sorted before fermentation with indigenous yeasts, incorporating a proportion of whole bunches to enhance perfume, structure, and complexity. The wine is matured in French oak barriques, with restrained use of new oak to preserve the vineyard’s distinctive fruit character and refined texture.

The bouquet is beautifully perfumed, revealing aromas of juniper, cranberry, red plum, and dark cherry, intertwined with notes of cardamom, pink peppercorn, dried oregano, and delicate floral spice. As the wine opens, subtle hints of tea leaf, cedar, forest floor, and mineral nuance emerge, adding further depth and sophistication.

On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, silky, and exceptionally poised, delivering flavours of red cherry, cranberry, plum, and wild berries supported by vibrant natural acidity and finely coating tannins. The texture is seamless and refined, balancing purity of fruit with savoury complexity and remarkable precision.

The finish is long, elegant, and persistent, lingering with notes of red fruits, gentle spice, dried herbs, and mineral freshness. Although already approachable after decanting, the 2020 Ata Rangi Pinot Noir possesses outstanding ageing potential and is expected to evolve gracefully for 15–20 years, developing additional savoury and tertiary complexity. It received 98-point scores from both James Suckling and Bob Campbell MW, underlining its status as one of the great wines of the vintage.
