The 2020 Kaesler Old Bastard Shiraz is one of Australia’s most iconic old-vine Shiraz wines, produced by Kaesler Wines from some of the oldest surviving Shiraz vines in the Barossa Valley. First planted in 1893, these ancient, dry-grown vines produce exceptionally low yields, resulting in a wine of extraordinary concentration, complexity, and longevity.

Widely regarded as Kaesler’s flagship wine, Old Bastard is a powerful expression of old-vine Barossa Shiraz, combining immense fruit intensity with remarkable structure and balance. The 2020 vintage delivered excellent fruit quality despite challenging seasonal conditions, producing wines with deep concentration, richness, and impressive freshness.

The fruit was hand-harvested from selected parcels of centenarian vines before undergoing traditional fermentation. The wine was matured in premium French oak barrels, carefully chosen to complement the wine’s intensity while preserving the purity and character of the fruit.

The bouquet is rich, complex, and deeply layered, revealing aromas of blackberry, black plum, black cherry, and blueberry compote, intertwined with notes of dark chocolate, liquorice, espresso, vanilla bean, and sweet spice. Further complexity emerges through hints of cedar, graphite, earth, and roasted coffee bean.

On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, opulent, and immensely concentrated. Flavours of ripe black fruits, plum preserve, mocha, dark chocolate, and exotic spices are supported by velvety yet powerful tannins. Despite its richness, the wine retains balance through vibrant acidity and exceptional fruit definition.

The finish is extraordinarily long and persistent, delivering layers of black fruit, cocoa, spice, liquorice, and subtle oak complexity that linger for minutes. While approachable with extended decanting, the 2020 Old Bastard Shiraz is built for long-term cellaring and will continue to evolve beautifully over the next 20–30 years.
