The 2020 Penfolds RWT Bin 798 Shiraz is one of Australia’s most refined expressions of Barossa Shiraz, produced by Penfolds. The initials RWT stand for “Red Winemaking Trial,” a project originally developed in the mid-1990s that has since become a flagship interpretation of plush, aromatic, single-region Barossa Shiraz.

Unlike Grange, which is more powerful and structural, RWT is designed to showcase opulence, perfume, and velvety texture, offering a more polished and approachable expression of top-tier Barossa fruit. The 2020 vintage is widely regarded as a benchmark year, delivering wines of exceptional concentration, purity, and intensity.

Fruit is sourced exclusively from premium Barossa Valley vineyards, with careful selection of parcels chosen for aromatic lift and fine tannin structure. The wine is matured for around 16 months in French oak hogsheads, with a significant proportion of new oak, adding spice, complexity, and structure while preserving the wine’s plush fruit core.

The bouquet is deeply aromatic and expressive, showing layers of blackberry, black plum, mulberry, and boysenberry, alongside notes of violet, liquorice, dark chocolate, espresso, and warm baking spices. Subtle undertones of cedar, vanilla, and graphite add further depth.

On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet remarkably seamless. Flavours of ripe black fruits, plum, and dark berries are wrapped in ultra-fine, velvety tannins. There is both richness and precision here—power balanced by elegance, with a long, even flow across the palate.

The finish is exceptionally long and polished, with lingering notes of dark berries, cocoa, spice, roasted coffee, and subtle savoury oak. While already impressive in its youth, the 2020 RWT is built for long-term cellaring and will continue to evolve over the next 20–30 years.
