The 2022 Brokenwood Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz is one of Australia’s most iconic single-vineyard wines and the 33rd release from the legendary Graveyard Vineyard in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales. Sourced from old vines planted on heavy clay soils, this flagship Shiraz is celebrated for its elegance, longevity, and unmistakable regional character.

The 2022 vintage was shaped by a cool, wet La Niña growing season, moderated by consistent breezes that maintained excellent vineyard health despite record November rainfall. One of the latest Hunter Valley harvests in many years, the old Graveyard vines were picked in pristine condition during the second week of February, producing fruit of exceptional fragrance, purity, and natural balance.

Winemaking began with a three-day cold soak, followed by a 5–6 day fermentation at controlled temperatures of 24–26°C. The wine was matured exclusively in French oak puncheons (one-, two-, and three-year-old barrels), with no new oak, ensuring the vineyard’s fruit character remains the focal point while adding subtle texture and refinement.

The bouquet is intensely perfumed, displaying aromas of red cherry, blackberry, bramble fruits, and red plum, layered with red spice, black pepper, subtle floral notes, and gentle earthiness. Delicate hints of Campari, dried herbs, and fine oak spice provide additional complexity, reflecting the distinctive elegance of Hunter Valley Shiraz.

On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, supple, and beautifully composed, delivering flavours of red cherry, blackberry, plum, and wild berries. The mid-palate is generous and silky, with vibrant natural acidity supporting the fruit sweetness. Fine, persistent tannins create outstanding structure while maintaining remarkable finesse and balance.

The finish is long, elegant, and exceptionally persistent, lingering with notes of red berries, spice, fine tannins, and savoury minerality. While already captivating after decanting, the 2022 Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz is built for long-term cellaring and is expected to evolve beautifully over the next 20 years or more.
