The 2022 Cloudy Bay Te Wāhi Pinot Noir is a premium Central Otago Pinot Noir made from fruit grown at Cloudy Bay’s Northburn and Calvert vineyards. Northburn, on the steep eastern bank of Lake Dunstan, has rocky glacial soils that contribute structure and intensity, while Calvert’s silty, loamy soils on an ancient lakebed produce opulent and fragrant fruit. The combination creates a wine with both power and elegance.

The fruit is predominantly de-stemmed before fermentation in open-top tanks, with a portion of whole bunches included to add complexity and structure. Following fermentation, the wine undergoes extended maceration and spontaneous malolactic fermentation. It is then matured for a year or more in French oak barrels before bottling, allowing the tannins, fruit and oak characters to integrate.

The 2022 vintage opens with restrained aromas that gradually reveal damson, raw cacao and subtle star anise. On the palate, silky tannins frame a concentrated core of blackberry, plum and sweet sloe, complemented by fragrant spice, vanillin notes and a graphite-like freshness. The result is a powerful yet poised Pinot Noir with depth, balance and a long finish.
