The 2022 Vasse Felix Cabernet Sauvignon is the flagship Cabernet of Vasse Felix, representing over five decades of winemaking excellence in Margaret River. First produced in 1972, this iconic wine is regarded as one of Australia’s benchmark Cabernet Sauvignons, celebrated for its elegance, purity, structure, and exceptional ageing potential. The 2022 release marks the winery’s 51st vintage of this historic wine.

The 2022 growing season was characterised by a cool spring followed by a warm, dry summer, resulting in lower yields and fruit of outstanding concentration and varietal expression. The final blend comprises 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Malbec, and 1% Merlot. Fruit was hand-harvested, fermented with wild yeasts using 100% whole berries, and matured for 18 months in French oak barriques, 34% of which were new oak.

The bouquet is intensely aromatic and complex, offering layers of blackcurrant, dark berry coulis, raspberry pip, and mulberry, intertwined with graphite, wet stone, cedar, dried herbs, and forest floor nuances. Floral notes of potpourri and everlasting flowers are complemented by hints of liquorice, star anise, charcoal, vanilla, and fine oak spice.

On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with remarkable poise and precision. Concentrated flavours of blackberry, cassis, blueberry skin, dark chocolate, and black plum are framed by vibrant acidity and impeccably structured tannins. The texture is polished and seamless, delivering both power and finesse in equal measure.

The finish is long, refined, and persistent, with lingering notes of dark berries, cocoa, cedar, graphite, and savoury spice. While approachable with decanting in its youth, the wine possesses the balance and structure to reward cellaring for 15–20 years or more.
