The 2022 Yangarra Estate Vineyard King’s Wood Shiraz is a premium single-block Shiraz from Block 12 at Yangarra Estate in Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale. The 2.3-hectare block was planted in 1999 and sits at 180–195 metres elevation on a south-east-facing outcrop of weathered sands mixed with ironstone gravels. The elevated site and sandy, ironstone-rich soils are particularly suited to producing bright, aromatic and spice-driven Shiraz. The vineyard is farmed organically and biodynamically.

The 2022 growing season was slightly cooler than 2021, with favourable winter rainfall, mild flowering and fruit set, followed by a cool ripening period from late January through to harvest in March. The slower ripening conditions helped preserve natural acidity and freshness while developing concentrated, expressive fruit. The grapes were hand-picked on 25 March.

Fruit from Block 12 was fermented in open fermenters using wild yeast, with 15% whole bunches and the remaining fruit selectively berry-sorted and crushed. The wine spent approximately 20 days on skins, with gentle cap management designed to minimise excessive extraction. No pressings were used. Following fermentation, the wine was matured for 18 months in a combination of French and Austrian oak, including 25-hectolitre foudres. It remained on lees in the foudres for six months before blending and a further 12 months of maturation in the same vessels. The wine was bottled in November 2023.

The finished wine is an elegant yet powerful expression of McLaren Vale Shiraz, combining dark and red berry fruit with black olive, spice, floral and savoury characters. Fine tannins and bright acidity provide structure and length, while the large-format French and Austrian oak contributes complexity without overpowering the fruit. Wine Enthusiast awarded the 2022 vintage 96 points, highlighting its fresh forest fruit, black olive, dark chocolate, violet and charred-meat characters.
