The 2023 Craggy Range Aroha Pinot Noir is one of New Zealand’s most iconic single-vineyard Pinot Noirs, produced by the renowned estate Craggy Range. Sourced exclusively from the historic Aroha Vineyard in Martinborough, this wine represents the pinnacle of Craggy Range’s Pinot Noir program and is widely regarded as one of the country’s most age-worthy and elegant expressions of the variety.

The Aroha Vineyard is situated on ancient alluvial gravels in Martinborough, a region celebrated for producing structured, finely detailed Pinot Noir with purity, perfume, and natural tension. The 2023 vintage delivered excellent conditions, with a long, even ripening season allowing for exceptional flavour concentration while retaining vibrant acidity and finesse.

Winemaking follows a meticulous, low-intervention approach: hand harvesting, strict berry selection, partial whole-bunch fermentation, wild yeast fermentation, and maturation in French oak barriques (with a careful proportion of new oak). The emphasis is always on site expression, elegance, and long-term structure.

The bouquet is highly perfumed and complex, showing red cherry, wild strawberry, raspberry, and cranberry, layered with floral notes of violet, rose petal, and dried herbs. Beneath the fruit lies a distinctive savoury depth of forest floor, spice, and subtle earthy minerality.

On the palate, the wine is silky, medium-bodied, and finely structured, with bright natural acidity and ultra-fine tannins. Flavours of red berries, cherry compote, and ripe plum are supported by savoury spice and mineral tension, giving the wine both immediate appeal and serious cellaring potential.

The finish is long, elegant, and persistent, with lingering notes of red cherry, cranberry, floral lift, spice, and earthy complexity. While already beautifully expressive, the 2023 Aroha Pinot Noir is built for long-term ageing and will continue to evolve over 10–20+ years, developing deeper savoury and tertiary complexity.
