The 2023 Henschke Johann’s Garden Grenache Blend is a finely crafted Barossa Valley red blend from one of Australia’s most prestigious family-owned wineries, Henschke. It showcases a more elegant, aromatic expression of Barossa fruit, with a focus on perfume, finesse, and layered complexity rather than sheer power.

This wine is typically built around Grenache, supported by Shiraz and Mataro (Mourvèdre), sourced from select old-vine vineyards in the Barossa Valley. The 2023 vintage benefited from balanced growing conditions, producing fruit with bright acidity, purity, and excellent aromatic lift.

The wine is matured in a combination of seasoned French oak and a small portion of new oak, allowing the vibrant fruit profile to remain the focus while adding subtle spice and structure.

On the nose, it is highly perfumed, showing raspberry, red cherry, strawberry, and pomegranate, layered with rose petal, violet, white pepper, dried herbs, and subtle baking spice. With time in the glass, deeper notes of plum, liquorice, cocoa, and earthy savouriness begin to emerge.

On the palate, it is medium-bodied, silky, and finely structured, with bright red fruit purity at its core. The Grenache provides juiciness and perfume, while Shiraz and Mataro add depth, spice, and gentle tannin structure.

The finish is long, elegant, and lifted, with lingering notes of red berries, floral spice, and soft earthy complexity. It is designed for both early enjoyment and short-to-medium term cellaring.
