The 2023 Standish ‘The Standish’ Shiraz is the flagship wine of the acclaimed The Standish Wine Company and one of Australia’s most sought-after single-vineyard Shiraz expressions. Crafted by sixth-generation Barossa winemaker Dan Standish, this iconic wine is sourced from the historic Laycock Family Vineyard in Greenock, Barossa Valley, where old dry-grown vines and distinctive red clay and loam soils produce fruit of exceptional concentration and character.

The 2023 vintage was shaped by a long, cool growing season that delivered remarkable purity, aromatic detail, and balance. Widely regarded as one of the finest recent Standish releases, the wine combines the power expected of Barossa Shiraz with extraordinary finesse, freshness, and site expression.

Produced using meticulous hand-selection and traditional winemaking techniques, including whole-bunch fermentation and maturation in a combination of new and seasoned French oak, the wine captures both the richness of the vineyard and the precision of Dan Standish’s contemporary style.

The bouquet is deeply complex and intensely aromatic, revealing layers of black cherry, blackberry, satsuma plum, mulberry, and dark berries, intertwined with notes of dried rose petals, sandalwood, liquorice, exotic spice, charcuterie, violets, and cocoa. Additional hints of graphite, crushed stone, tapenade, and earthy minerality provide further intrigue and sophistication.

On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet remarkably refined. Concentrated flavours of black fruits, plum, blackberry, liquorice, and dark chocolate are framed by finely structured tannins and vibrant acidity. The texture is plush and seamless, balancing density and power with exceptional elegance and precision.

The finish is extraordinarily long and layered, lingering with notes of black cherry, spice, graphite, cocoa, earth, and savoury complexity. While approachable with decanting, this is a wine built for extended cellaring and is expected to evolve beautifully through 2043 and beyond.
