The 2021 Bass Phillip Premium Pinot Noir is a highly regarded cool-climate Pinot Noir from Victoria’s Gippsland region, produced by Bass Phillip. Known for its low-intervention philosophy and long-standing reputation among Australia’s most iconic Pinot Noir producers, Bass Phillip crafts wines that emphasize purity, concentration, and site expression.

The 2021 vintage in Gippsland delivered excellent conditions for Pinot Noir, with a long, even ripening season that allowed for exceptional flavour development while preserving natural acidity and fine tannin structure. The result is a wine of precision, depth, and remarkable aromatic complexity.

Produced from estate-grown vineyards managed with a biodynamic and minimal-intervention approach, the fruit was hand-harvested and carefully sorted before fermentation. A portion of whole-bunch inclusion was used to enhance perfume, structure, and complexity. The wine was then matured in French oak barrels, with careful restraint to maintain purity of fruit and vineyard character.

The bouquet is highly expressive, showing aromas of red cherry, wild strawberry, raspberry, and cranberry, layered with notes of violet, rose petal, cinnamon spice, and subtle clove. With aeration, deeper savoury elements emerge, including forest floor, dried herbs, truffle, and earthy minerality.

On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, silky, and finely structured. Flavours of red berries, cherry, plum skin, and wild strawberry are supported by fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity. The texture is elegant and seamless, with impressive concentration balanced by freshness and lift.

The finish is long, savoury, and persistent, with lingering notes of red fruit, spice, floral perfume, and complex earthy undertones. While already approachable with decanting, the wine has excellent ageing potential and will continue to evolve over the next 10–15 years.
