Hand-picked fruit was fermented and matured in large ceramic eggs, with 48% of the final blend receiving extended skin contact. The 2024 Yangarra Estate Vineyard Ovitelli Blanc is a premium, Southern Rhône-inspired white blend from Yangarra’s certified organic and biodynamic estate in Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale. The wine is sourced from Blocks 9 and 6, planted in 1946 on weathered sandy soils mixed with ironstone gravels at 170–190 metres elevation. The 2024 blend comprises 31% Grenache Gris, 28% Grenache Blanc, 22% Clairette and 18% Roussanne, with a 13.5% alcohol level.
The 2024 growing season began with a wet winter and dry spring, followed by unexpected summer rainfall in December and January. Warm conditions through February and early March encouraged flavour and sugar development while maintaining balance across the varieties. The grapes were hand-picked and sorted separately, with Roussanne harvested on 12 March, Grenache Blanc on 22 March, and Grenache Gris and Clairette on 4 April.
A portion of the Grenache Blanc and Roussanne was destemmed and crushed directly into ceramic eggs, where it underwent extended skin contact for approximately four months. The remaining batches were destemmed and pressed, with the juice fermented in ceramic vessels. No sulphur was added until fermentation or extended skin contact was complete. Overall, 48% of the final blend was skin-contacted, and the blended wine was matured in ceramic for a total of seven months before being bottled in November 2024.
The result is a textured and sophisticated white wine with lifted floral perfume and mineral, rock-derived phenolics. The increased Grenache Gris component contributes additional aromatic intensity, while extended skin contact gives the wine structure, savoury complexity and a gently grippy texture. Robert Parker Wine Advocate awarded the 2024 Ovitelli Blanc 95 points, describing it as elegant and sophisticated with a palate shaped by skin and fruit tannin.
