Yabby Lake Vineyard was established by the Kirby family in 1998, in Tuerong, which is located in the northern end of the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria. Over the past decade, the vineyard has built a reputation for chardonnay and pinot noir of great purity and character under its Single Vineyard and Single Block Release labels.

Led by winemaker Tom Carson, the Yabby Lake philosophy is to craft wines that speak of our site and the season in which they were grown. It’s the attention and care in the vineyard that is most critical to allowing this expression.

  • HUON HOOKE

    93 Points
Deep purple-red hue; aromas are meaty/reductive overlying smoked charcuterie and peppery spices. In the mouth, it's full-bodied but supple and gentle, with a touch of elegance. The texture is slinky and lithe, the persistence medium-long. An elegant shiraz, which earns the syrah description.

AROMA

A perfumed and spicy Syrah, medium-bodied in style.

PALATE

The palate is concentrated and silky, with finely structured tannins, bright fruit characters, wonderful elegance and depth.

WINEMAKER'S COMMENTS

Our philosophy is to craft single vineyard wines of great purity and character, reflective of our site and the season in which it was grown. It’s the attention and care in the vineyard that is most critical to allowing this expression.

VINIFICATION

The fruit was handpicked on 21 March from Block 3, a block planted on sandy loam soils, over callabonna clay. Gently de-stemmed into traditional oak open fermenters. A small portion of whole bunches (20%). After 10-14 days on skins, the wine was pressed into tight grain 500L French oak puncheons for malolactic fermentation and maturation.

MATURATION

In oak for 14 months and racked once during maturation.

VINTAGE NOTES

2021 was a vintage of exceptional quality. A wet winter, mild spring and temperate summer produced wines that will live long in the memory and in the cellar.

CELLARING POTENTIAL

Cellared carefully, this wine will age gracefully for ten years.
