 Vintage Notes

The 2021 growing season started off remarkably well with deep soaking winter rains extending into spring, ensuring excellent soil moisture and reducing frost risks. A mild spring at bud break set the stage for an outstanding vintage. Despite a dry season, the conditions were relatively mild, with warm days and cool nights. The low disease pressure resulted in fruit that was flavorful, high in natural acidity, and had modest sugar levels. Wines from 2021 are enjoyable when young, but many have the potential to age well, marking this as one of the best vintages in recent years.

Winemaking

In March, fruit from three vineyards was harvested and vinified separately to showcase the unique characteristics of each site. All grapes were destemmed and crushed into open fermenters, fermenting at temperatures not exceeding 25°C for 10-14 days. The fermenting cap was managed with twice-daily pump overs. Once dry, the wines were bag pressed to tanks for malolactic fermentation (MLF) before being racked to oak. After 3 months of aging on lees, the components were racked, blended, and returned to a mix of French barrels (10% new) and 6.6KL French vats. An additional 12 months of maturation allowed the wine to harmonize and soften before racking, filtering, and bottling.

Tasting Notes

The wine exhibits a rich crimson color with purple hues at the rim. The bouquet is vibrant and fresh, with blueberry and plum aromas leaping from the glass, complemented by an underlying gamey and dusty savoriness. Subtle herbal notes of incense and spice, along with soft oak, add elegance. The palate is explosive and juicy, featuring cherry, plum, and forest berry flavors, supported by hints of spices and herbs leading to a textural finish. With crunchy acidity, a full body, and fine tannins, this Shiraz has a characterful structure. Fresh and contemporary, yet timelessly Barossan, it drinks well now and will age gracefully for a decade.
