The 2023 Frankland Isolation Ridge is crafted entirely from Riesling grapes grown at Frankland Estate's Isolation Ridge vineyard. Planted in 1988 on gently rolling northern and eastern slopes, the Riesling vines come from two distinct clones and thrive in duplex soils of ironstone gravel atop a clay subsoil.

Tasting Notes

Following tradition, we aged this wine on lees for nine months post-fermentation, embracing the texture and personality it imparts. This process accentuates delicate flinty ironstone notes, woven seamlessly into the wine’s mouthfeel. About 10% of the wine matured in barrels from our old ‘Pole’ and ‘Outback’ blocks, enhancing its complexity. In recent years, we’ve slightly extended ripeness at harvest, achieving a "resolved" acidity that integrates smoothly. These various small ferments, from diverse yeast strains and a mix of stainless steel and barrel aging, contribute layers of complexity to the final wine. — Frankland Estate

Recognized as one of Australia’s premier Rieslings, this wine combines texture and purity, with notes of lime blossom, ginger flower, and subtle beeswax. The palate is laced with flavors of lime cordial, lemon curd, mandarin, and zest, underpinned by refined, talcy acidity. 96 points. — Jane Faulkner, Wine Companion, Aug 2024

Aromas of apple, lime, and jasmine tea (which might evoke cravings for yum cha!) are joined by hints of aniseed. It’s rich yet finely textured, with flavors of apple, apricot, and ripe lime, along with a chalky nuance and barley sugar sweetness. The long finish carries a savory note of parmesan rind. 95 points. — Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, April 2024

One of the finest Isolation Ridge Rieslings, from a stellar vintage showing pristine purity and mineral-driven tension. With clones dating back to 1988, this Riesling isn’t typical—it spent nine months on lees, with 10% matured in oak, creating remarkable texture, fine acid interplay, and intense flavor. The finish offers a vibrant, crunchy minerality. Outstanding. 97 points. — Ray Jordan, WinePilot.com, April 2024

An exceptional Riesling in aroma, flavor, and complexity, marked by vibrant, pulsing acidity—a true winemaking Masterclass. Winemaker Hunter Smith credits this to picking fruit slightly riper than in earlier years. Perfumed with spring flowers, citrus blossom, lime zest, and exotic spices, it fills the mouth with citrus intensity—lime, lemon, and hints of ginger and lemongrass, all harmonized by well-integrated acidity. Nine months on lees and a touch of oak create depth, adding a subtle umami element to this compelling tasting experience. 97 points. — Jeni Port, WinePilot.com, April 2024
