The 2021 KOOMILYA JC Block Shiraz is a powerful, finely structured single-vineyard Shiraz from McLaren Vale’s elevated Koomilya vineyard, produced by Koomilya. Sourced exclusively from the JC Block, this wine represents one of the estate’s most expressive parcels, delivering intensity, precision, and long-term cellaring potential.

The JC Block sits on ancient, ironstone-rich soils at elevation, where cooler temperatures and strong diurnal variation allow Shiraz to develop deep flavour concentration while retaining natural acidity and aromatic lift. The 2021 vintage is widely regarded as an excellent McLaren Vale year, producing wines of balance, purity, and structural finesse.

Fruit was hand-harvested at optimal ripeness and carefully sorted before fermentation in small open fermenters. Gentle extraction techniques were used to preserve perfume and structure. The wine was then matured in premium French oak barrels, with a proportion of new oak contributing complexity, spice, and fine-grained tannins.

The bouquet is intense and layered, revealing aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant, dark plum, and blueberry, supported by notes of violet, black pepper, clove, and star anise. With time in the glass, savoury elements of graphite, olive tapenade, smoked meat, and dark chocolate emerge, adding depth and complexity.

On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet refined, showing both richness and precision. Flavours of dark berries, plum, liquorice, and spice are balanced by vibrant acidity and structured, polished tannins. The cool-climate influence of the JC Block gives the wine lift and freshness, preventing heaviness.

The finish is long, focused, and savoury, with lingering notes of black fruit, spice, graphite, and subtle earthy minerality. The 2021 JC Block Shiraz is already impressive but built for extended cellaring over 15–25 years, where it will develop further complexity and tertiary character.
