The 2022 KOOMILYA JC Block Shiraz is a powerful yet finely detailed single-vineyard Shiraz from the elevated slopes of McLaren Vale, South Australia. Crafted by Koomilya, this limited-production wine showcases the estate’s philosophy of producing structured, age-worthy Shiraz from some of the region’s highest and coolest vineyard sites.

The JC Block is one of Koomilya’s most distinctive vineyard parcels, planted on ancient rocky soils at elevation. The site’s cooler climate and low-yielding vines produce fruit with exceptional concentration, natural acidity, and aromatic complexity. The 2022 vintage provided ideal growing conditions, allowing for slow ripening and outstanding flavour development while maintaining freshness and balance.

Fruit was hand-harvested and carefully sorted before fermentation in small open fermenters. Traditional winemaking techniques, including gentle extraction and maturation in premium French oak barrels, were employed to preserve vineyard character while enhancing structure and complexity.

The bouquet is intense and sophisticated, revealing aromas of blackberry, black cherry, dark plum, and blueberry, layered with notes of violet, black pepper, star anise, and crushed herbs. As the wine opens, savoury nuances of graphite, smoked meat, olive tapenade, and dark chocolate emerge, adding depth and intrigue.

On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet remarkably refined. Flavours of dark berries, black plum, liquorice, and spice are supported by vibrant acidity and finely structured tannins. The cool-climate influence provides freshness and precision, balancing the wine’s natural richness and concentration.

The finish is exceptionally long, focused, and mineral-driven, with lingering notes of black fruit, spice, graphite, and savoury complexity. Built for long-term cellaring, the 2022 JC Block Shiraz is expected to evolve beautifully over the next 15–20 years.
