The 2023 Bass Phillip Premium Pinot Noir is a finely detailed cool-climate Pinot Noir from Victoria’s Gippsland region, produced by Bass Phillip. Sitting just below the iconic Reserve cuvée, the Premium bottling reflects the estate’s biodynamic, low-intervention approach while offering a slightly more approachable expression of its distinctive style.

The 2023 vintage in Gippsland delivered excellent growing conditions, with a long, even season that allowed for slow, complete ripening. This resulted in fruit with excellent aromatic lift, natural acidity, and finely balanced tannin structure.

Sourced from estate vineyards farmed under biodynamic principles, the fruit was hand-harvested and carefully sorted before fermentation. A proportion of whole-bunch inclusion was used to enhance perfume, structure, and complexity. The wine was then matured in French oak barrels, with restrained new oak influence to preserve purity and vineyard expression.

The bouquet is expressive and layered, showing aromas of red cherry, wild strawberry, raspberry, and cranberry, alongside notes of violet, rose petal, baking spice, and subtle clove. As it opens, more savoury nuances emerge, including forest floor, dried herbs, tea leaf, and earthy minerality.

On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, silky, and finely structured. Flavours of red berries, cherry, plum skin, and wild strawberry are supported by fine tannins and vibrant acidity. The texture is elegant and seamless, with a strong sense of freshness and precision.

The finish is long, refined, and gently savoury, with lingering notes of red fruit, spice, floral perfume, and soft earthy complexity. While already approachable with decanting, the wine will continue to evolve and gain complexity over the next 8–15 years.
