The 2022 Bass Phillip Estate Pinot Noir is a refined cool-climate Pinot Noir from Victoria’s Gippsland region, produced by Bass Phillip. As the estate-level expression, it reflects the winery’s biodynamic farming and minimalist winemaking philosophy, offering a pure, transparent expression of site and vintage.

The 2022 growing season in Gippsland delivered varied but ultimately rewarding conditions, with careful vineyard management allowing fruit to reach optimal ripeness while retaining freshness and natural acidity. The resulting wine shows brightness, balance, and fine structural detail.

Sourced from estate-managed vineyards farmed under biodynamic principles, the fruit was hand-harvested and carefully sorted before fermentation. A proportion of whole-bunch inclusion was used to enhance aromatic lift, spice, and structural definition. The wine was then matured in French oak barrels, with restrained new oak to maintain purity and vineyard character.

The bouquet is fragrant and expressive, revealing aromas of red cherry, wild strawberry, raspberry, and cranberry, layered with notes of violet, rose petal, baking spice, and subtle clove. With time in the glass, savoury nuances of forest floor, dried herbs, tea leaf, and earthy minerality begin to emerge.

On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, silky, and finely structured. Flavours of red berries, cherry, plum skin, and wild strawberry are supported by fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity. The texture is elegant and seamless, with a fresh and focused line through the palate.

The finish is long, refined, and gently savoury, with lingering notes of red fruit, spice, floral perfume, and subtle earthy complexity. While approachable in its youth, the wine has good ageing potential and will continue to develop complexity over the next 8–12 years.

A classic Gippsland Pinot Noir, the 2022 Bass Phillip Estate highlights purity, finesse, and the distinctive biodynamic character that defines this iconic Australian estate.
