The 2023 Polperro Coverdale Single Vineyard Pinot Noir is a finely structured, site-expressive Pinot Noir from Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, produced by Polperro Wines. Sourced exclusively from the Coverdale Vineyard in Red Hill, this wine highlights the purity, tension, and elegance that define the best cool-climate Pinot Noir sites on the Peninsula.

The Coverdale site is shaped by a cool maritime climate, elevated position, and clay-based soils, which contribute to wines of fine tannin structure, lifted aromatics, and natural acidity. The 2023 vintage provided ideal ripening conditions, producing fruit with clarity, concentration, and excellent balance.

Hand-harvested grapes were carefully sorted and fermented in small open vessels, often incorporating a proportion of whole bunches to enhance fragrance, spice, and structural detail. The wine was then matured in French oak barrels, with restrained new oak use to preserve vineyard expression and finesse.

The bouquet is expressive and refined, revealing aromas of red cherry, wild strawberry, raspberry, and cranberry, layered with notes of rose petal, violet, baking spice, and subtle cedar. As the wine evolves, more savoury nuances emerge, including forest floor, dried herbs, tea leaf, and earthy minerality.

On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, silky, and finely poised. Flavours of red berries, cherry, raspberry, and plum skin are supported by fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity. The texture is elegant and seamless, with a strong sense of precision and site definition.

The finish is long, savoury, and refined, leaving lingering notes of red fruit, spice, floral perfume, and gentle earthy complexity. While approachable in its youth, the wine has excellent cellaring potential and will continue to develop further nuance over the next 8–12 years.
