The 2005 Rockford Basket Press Shiraz is a mature and highly collectible Barossa Valley Shiraz from the cult-heritage producer Rockford Wines. Known for its traditional winemaking methods and old-vine fruit sourcing, Basket Press is one of Australia’s most respected and consistently sought-after Shiraz wines, especially in well-aged vintages like 2005.

The 2005 Barossa vintage delivered classic conditions for structured, long-lived Shiraz, producing wines with excellent fruit depth, firm tannin structure, and strong ageing potential. Now with significant bottle age, this release shows the evolution and complexity that define mature Barossa Shiraz at its best.

Fruit was sourced from old, dry-grown Barossa vineyards and crafted using traditional techniques, including open fermentation and basket pressing. The wine was then matured in a combination of seasoned American and French oak hogsheads, allowing long-term development while preserving varietal identity and regional character.

The bouquet is fully evolved and deeply complex, showing dried blackberry, black cherry, and plum compote, layered with tertiary aromas of leather, earth, tobacco leaf, cedar, spice, and dark chocolate. Savoury notes of game, dried herbs, and forest floor are now prominent, reflecting two decades of graceful ageing.

On the palate, the wine is smooth, mature, and medium to full-bodied, with softened tannins and a seamless, velvety texture. Flavours of dried dark fruits, stewed plum, cocoa, and spice are integrated with savoury earthy complexity and subtle remaining fruit sweetness.

The finish is long, savoury, and gently fading in intensity, with lingering notes of tobacco, leather, dried berries, spice, and earthy nuance. At this stage, the wine is fully mature, offering complexity and elegance rather than primary fruit power.
