The 2019 Mount Pleasant Maurice O’Shea Shiraz is the flagship wine from the historic Hunter Valley estate, produced by Mount Pleasant. Named in honour of pioneering winemaker Maurice O’Shea, this iconic Shiraz represents the pinnacle of the estate’s vineyard holdings and is only released in exceptional vintages.

The blend draws fruit from some of the Hunter Valley’s most revered sites, including Old Hill, Old Paddock, Rosehill (1946 plantings), and 1965 vines, creating a layered and complex expression of regional Shiraz. The 2019 vintage is widely regarded as outstanding, producing wines of precision, purity, and exceptional balance.

Careful vineyard selection and hand harvesting ensured only the finest parcels were used. Fermentation was carried out in small batches with gentle extraction to preserve aromatics and finesse. The wine was then matured in a combination of large-format French oak, with a low proportion of new oak to maintain freshness, site character, and structural integrity.

The bouquet is powerful yet refined, showing blackberry, black cherry, and dark plum, layered with violet, star anise, clove, and pepper spice. With air, complex savoury tones of earth, leather, dried herbs, and subtle smoked nuances emerge, adding depth and intrigue.

On the palate, the wine is medium-to-full bodied, with a signature Hunter Valley balance of elegance and structure. Flavours of dark fruit, plum, and spice are carried by bright natural acidity and finely integrated tannins, giving the wine lift and longevity rather than sheer weight.

The finish is long, poised, and savoury, with lingering notes of black fruit, spice, and earthy complexity. Built for serious ageing, this wine will continue to evolve over 15–30 years, developing greater tertiary character and complexity over time.
