The 2023 Wendouree Malbec is a rare and highly sought-after Australian Malbec from the legendary Wendouree vineyard in Clare Valley, South Australia. Produced by Wendouree, this limited-production wine exemplifies the estate’s reputation for crafting deeply concentrated, traditionally styled wines with exceptional ageing potential.

Wendouree is one of Australia’s most revered historic wine estates, renowned for its low-yielding dry-grown vineyards, minimal intervention philosophy, and unwavering commitment to quality. The estate’s Malbec is produced in extremely limited quantities and is highly regarded by collectors for its structure, complexity, and longevity.

The 2023 growing season in Clare Valley delivered excellent fruit quality, with warm days and cool evenings encouraging slow ripening and outstanding flavour concentration. Careful vineyard management and selective harvesting ensured the fruit retained freshness while achieving full phenolic maturity.

Traditional winemaking techniques were employed throughout production. The wine was fermented using gentle extraction methods before maturation in seasoned oak, allowing the vineyard character and varietal expression to remain the focus.

The bouquet is intense and captivating, revealing aromas of blackberry, black plum, mulberry, and dark cherry, layered with notes of violet, liquorice, black pepper, and dried herbs. As the wine opens, complex savoury characters of earth, graphite, leather, and dark cocoa emerge.

On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, structured, and deeply concentrated. Flavours of dark berries, plum, blackcurrant, and spice are framed by firm, finely textured tannins and vibrant acidity. The wine displays impressive depth and balance, combining richness with remarkable freshness and precision.

The finish is exceptionally long and persistent, with lingering notes of dark fruit, spice, graphite, and savoury complexity. While approachable with extended decanting, the 2023 Wendouree Malbec is built for long-term cellaring and is expected to evolve gracefully over the next 15–25 years.
