The 2021 John Duval Eligo Shiraz is the flagship wine of the John Duval portfolio, representing the finest expression of old-vine Barossa Shiraz. Crafted by renowned winemaker John Duval, former Chief Winemaker at Penfolds, Eligo is produced only in exceptional vintages from a selection of the best old-vine vineyard parcels across the Barossa Valley.

The name Eligo, Latin for “to select,” reflects the meticulous vineyard selection process behind this prestigious wine. The 2021 vintage is considered outstanding in the Barossa Valley, delivering fruit with exceptional concentration, balance, and purity. Low yields and ideal ripening conditions produced Shiraz of remarkable depth and structure while maintaining freshness and elegance.

Fruit was sourced from mature vineyards, many exceeding 80 years of age, planted on diverse Barossa soils. Following hand harvesting, the wine was fermented in small batches and matured in premium French oak barrels, allowing the vineyard character and old-vine intensity to shine through while adding refinement and complexity.

The bouquet is powerful and highly expressive, revealing layers of blackberry, black cherry, dark plum, and blueberry, intertwined with notes of violet, star anise, black pepper, liquorice, and dark chocolate. As the wine evolves, savoury nuances of graphite, cedar, roasted coffee bean, and earth emerge.

On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet remarkably polished. Concentrated flavours of black fruits, plum compote, spice, and mocha are supported by fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity. Despite its richness, the wine maintains exceptional balance and precision, showcasing the hallmark elegance that distinguishes John Duval’s winemaking style.

The finish is extraordinarily long and layered, with lingering notes of dark berries, spice, cocoa, graphite, and subtle oak complexity. Built for extended cellaring, the 2021 Eligo Shiraz is expected to evolve gracefully over the next 15–25 years.
