The 2023 Bekkers Clarendon Syrah is the inaugural single-vineyard Syrah release from the renowned Bekkers Wine, crafted by Toby and Emmanuelle Bekkers from their historic Clarendon vineyard in the elevated McLaren Vale subregion. Produced in extremely limited quantities, this flagship wine represents the pinnacle of the Bekkers portfolio, showcasing a remarkable combination of site expression, precision, and elegance.

The fruit is sourced from two carefully selected vineyard parcels in Clarendon, one of the coolest and highest sites in McLaren Vale. The 2023 vintage was hand-picked, with 67% destemmed fruit and 33% whole bunches, followed by a long, gentle fermentation. The wine matured for 16 months in 500L French oak puncheons, with approximately 33% new oak, before bottling to preserve freshness, aromatic purity, and structural finesse.

The bouquet is intensely perfumed and beautifully layered, revealing aromas of blackberry, blood plum, redcurrant, and raspberry, intertwined with violet, lavender, cinnamon, clove, and Indian spices. As the wine opens, complex notes of olive tapenade, graphite, nori, crushed stone, and subtle savoury herbs emerge, creating extraordinary aromatic depth.

On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, silky, and remarkably poised, delivering concentrated flavours of blackberry, dark cherry, blueberry, and red plum. Whole-bunch fermentation contributes vibrant spice and floral lift, while finely detailed tannins and mineral tension provide exceptional balance and precision. Despite its intensity, the wine remains graceful and weightless, reflecting the cool-climate influence of the Clarendon site.

The finish is exceptionally long, refined, and persistent, with lingering notes of dark berries, white pepper, graphite, lavender, cocoa, and savoury spice. Built for long-term cellaring, the 2023 Bekkers Clarendon Syrah is expected to evolve beautifully over the next 15–20+ years. The wine has already received outstanding critical acclaim, including 98 points from Halliday Wine Companion, praising its harmony, mineral precision, and breathtaking class.
