The 2016 Bekkers Syrah – Grenache is a flagship McLaren Vale red blend from the acclaimed Bekkers Wine, crafted by Toby and Emmanuelle Bekkers. Widely regarded as one of Australia’s benchmark Rhône-inspired blends, it exemplifies the estate’s philosophy of producing wines with exceptional texture, elegance, and vineyard expression rather than sheer power.

The 2016 vintage is composed of 64.5% Syrah and 35.5% Grenache, sourced from carefully selected vineyard parcels across McLaren Vale. Late-ripening Syrah from Clarendon contributes generosity, dark fruit, and silky texture, while old bush-vine Grenache provides aromatic lift, vibrant red fruit, and exotic spice.

Winemaking follows Bekkers’ meticulous low-intervention philosophy. Around 18% whole bunches were included during fermentation, with the remaining fruit gently destemmed, naturally fermented using indigenous yeasts, and basket pressed into seasoned 500L French oak puncheons. The wine matured on fine lees with minimal sulphur additions before being bottled unfiltered, preserving purity, texture, and complexity.

The bouquet is deeply perfumed and complex, revealing aromas of blackberry, blackberry plum, dark cherry, and raspberry, layered with notes of violet, liquorice, clove, star anise, and Asian spices. Subtle hints of new leather, tobacco, dried herbs, and earthy minerality add further depth and sophistication.

On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, seamless, and beautifully textured, delivering concentrated flavours of blackberry, plum, black cherry, and dark berry fruits. The Grenache introduces brightness and savoury spice, while the Syrah provides richness and structure. Fine chalky tannins and vibrant acidity create remarkable balance, precision, and length.

The finish is long, silky, and exceptionally elegant, lingering with notes of dark berries, liquorice, pepper, clove, and savoury spice. Although approachable after decanting, the 2016 Bekkers Syrah–Grenache possesses outstanding cellaring potential and is expected to evolve beautifully over the next 10–15 years. The wine received widespread critical acclaim, including 98 points from James Halliday, 97 points from Andrew Caillard MW, and 96 points from James Suckling.
