The 2017 Cloudy Bay Te Wāhi Pinot Noir is a distinguished single-region Pinot Noir from Central Otago, New Zealand, crafted by Cloudy Bay. Meaning “the place” in Māori, Te Wāhi represents Cloudy Bay’s exploration of the dramatic landscapes and unique terroirs of Central Otago, producing a Pinot Noir of depth, structure, and remarkable elegance.

Sourced from select vineyards in the Bannockburn and Northburn subregions, the 2017 vintage benefited from favourable growing conditions that delivered fruit with excellent concentration, aromatic complexity, and balance. Central Otago’s combination of high-altitude vineyards, intense sunlight, and cool nights contributes to the wine’s vibrant fruit character and natural freshness.

The fruit was hand-harvested and carefully sorted before fermentation in small open-top vessels. A proportion of whole bunches was incorporated to build aromatic complexity and structural detail. The wine was then matured in French oak barrels, allowing it to develop texture, depth, and integration while maintaining vineyard expression.

The bouquet is highly expressive, revealing aromas of dark cherry, black raspberry, wild strawberry, and plum, layered with notes of violet, thyme, star anise, and exotic spice. As the wine opens, savoury nuances of forest floor, dried herbs, graphite, and earthy minerality emerge, adding complexity and intrigue.

On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, concentrated, and beautifully structured. Flavours of black cherry, raspberry, plum skin, and dark berries are supported by fine tannins and vibrant acidity. The palate displays both power and precision, balancing richness with freshness and elegance.

The finish is long, savoury, and persistent, leaving lingering impressions of dark fruit, spice, floral perfume, and mineral complexity. Now entering an excellent stage of development, the wine is beginning to reveal tertiary nuances while retaining freshness and structure. It will continue to evolve gracefully over the next 5–10 years.
