The 2020 Toby Bekkers Syrah is a finely crafted, low-intervention Barossa Valley Syrah from winemaker Toby Bekkers, known for producing elegant, site-transparent wines that emphasise balance, texture, and purity over overt richness.

The 2020 vintage in South Australia delivered a warm but well-balanced season, producing fruit with excellent ripeness while retaining freshness and structure. In the Barossa, this resulted in Syrah wines with deep concentration, fine tannins, and lifted aromatic detail.

Fruit is sourced from select old-vine Barossa vineyards, with fermentation carried out using gentle extraction techniques to preserve aromatic purity and tannin finesse. A proportion of whole-bunch fermentation is typically used to enhance spice, fragrance, and structural complexity. The wine is then matured in seasoned French oak to maintain fruit expression and textural refinement.

The bouquet is expressive and layered, showing blackberry, black cherry, and ripe plum, alongside lifted notes of violet, blueberry, and dark raspberry. Savoury complexity builds with aromas of black pepper, liquorice, dried herbs, and subtle earthiness, supported by faint smoky spice and mineral undertones.

On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, polished, and finely structured, with concentrated dark fruit flavours framed by fine-grained tannins. The style is powerful yet restrained, showing clarity and precision rather than heaviness.

The finish is long, elegant, and savoury, with lingering notes of dark berries, pepper spice, cocoa, and dried herbs. While approachable after decanting, the 2020 Toby Bekkers Syrah will continue to evolve gracefully over the next 10–15 years, gaining further complexity and savoury depth.
