The 2016 Toby Bekkers Syrah – Grenache is a highly regarded artisan Barossa Valley red blend from winemaker Toby Bekkers, known for producing low-intervention, site-driven wines with a focus on purity, balance, and expressive vineyard character.

The 2016 vintage in South Australia is widely considered an excellent year, delivering exceptional fruit concentration, fine tannin structure, and natural acidity. In the Barossa, this allowed for a Syrah–Grenache blend of both power and finesse, with depth and impressive ageing potential.

Fruit is sourced from select old-vine vineyard parcels, with Syrah providing structure, spice, and dark fruit intensity, while Grenache contributes perfume, brightness, and red-fruit lift. Fermentation is typically carried out with minimal intervention, often including whole-bunch components to enhance aromatic complexity and fine tannin detail. The wine is then matured in seasoned French oak to preserve purity and balance.

The bouquet is complex and perfumed, showing blackberry, black cherry, and ripe plum, layered with raspberry, red cherry, and wild strawberry from the Grenache component. Aromatic notes of violet, dried herbs, liquorice, and white pepper add lift and detail, along with subtle earthy spice and mineral undertones.

On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, silky, and finely structured, with a beautiful interplay between dark and red fruits. The tannins are fine-grained yet present, supporting a core of juicy fruit, spice, and savoury complexity.

The finish is long, elegant, and gently savoury, with lingering notes of dark berries, spice, dried herbs, and subtle earthy minerality. The 2016 Toby Bekkers Syrah–Grenache is drinking beautifully now but continues to show strong ageing potential, evolving gracefully over 10–15 years.
