The 2023 By Farr Tout Près Pinot Noir is a flagship single-vineyard Pinot Noir from Victoria’s Geelong region, produced by By Farr. “Tout Près” (meaning “very close” in French) refers to the vineyard’s proximity to the winery and represents one of the most concentrated and site-driven expressions in the By Farr range.

Sourced from a meticulously managed estate vineyard in the Moorabool Valley, the wine reflects the region’s unique combination of ancient volcanic soils, cool maritime influence, and low-yielding vines. The 2023 vintage delivered exceptional fruit purity, structure, and aromatic intensity, making it a standout year for Pinot Noir.

Crafted using traditional Burgundian techniques, including a significant portion of whole-bunch fermentation, the wine is matured in French oak barrels with a carefully judged proportion of new oak. This approach enhances structure and complexity while preserving the precision and purity of the fruit.

The bouquet is deep, layered, and highly expressive, revealing aromas of black cherry, dark raspberry, wild strawberry, and plum, interwoven with notes of violet, rose petal, baking spice, and subtle anise. With time in the glass, more savoury and complex elements emerge, including forest floor, dried herbs, truffle, and earthy minerality.

On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied to powerful in structure, showing remarkable depth and concentration. Flavours of dark cherry, blackberry, raspberry, and red plum are supported by firm yet finely integrated tannins and vibrant acidity. The texture is both dense and refined, delivering a wine of tension and precision.

The finish is exceptionally long and savoury, with lingering notes of dark fruit, spice, dried flowers, forest floor, and mineral complexity. While already impressive in its youth, the 2023 Tout Près has outstanding ageing potential and will continue to evolve over the next 10–20 years.
