The 2023 Yangarra Estate Vineyard Ovitelli Grenache is a premium single-block Grenache from Block 30 in Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale. The block was planted in 1946 and covers approximately 2 hectares at 205 metres elevation, with deep weathered sandy soils. These dry-grown old bush vines naturally produce low yields and highly perfumed fruit. The vineyard is farmed using organic and biodynamic practices. Yangarra describes Ovitelli as its most perfumed and elegant Grenache from the sandy soils of the estate.
The 2023 vintage was a cool growing season that favoured slow ripening and freshness. The resulting Ovitelli is notably lighter and more refined in style, with lower alcohol, bright acidity and a finely detailed tannin profile. Halliday awarded the 2023 Ovitelli Grenache 97 points, highlighting its cranberry, cherry, redcurrant, bergamot, potpourri, sumac, cinnamon and star-anise characters.
The winemaking philosophy behind Ovitelli centres on ceramic-egg fermentation and extended skin contact. Yangarra developed this approach through its early experiments with Grenache in ceramic eggs, using prolonged time on skins to refine the wine’s distinctive tannin structure and preserve purity of fruit.
The finished wine is an elegant and highly aromatic expression of old-vine Blewitt Springs Grenache, combining delicate red fruit and floral perfume with savoury spice, mineral freshness and finely textured tannins. Its concentration comes from the age and quality of the vines rather than heaviness, giving the 2023 vintage exceptional poise and length.
