The 2024 Henschke Five Shillings is a vibrant and modern red blend from one of Australia’s most historic and respected family wineries, Henschke. It sits in the more approachable tier of the portfolio, offering excellent value while still reflecting the precision, vineyard focus, and craftsmanship the estate is known for.

Produced by Henschke, this wine is a blend of Shiraz (approximately 76%) and Mataro (24%), sourced from Eden Valley and Barossa Valley vineyards. The 2024 vintage benefited from strong growing conditions, delivering fruit with purity, freshness, and balanced ripeness.

The wine is matured for around 8 months in a mix of seasoned and a small proportion of new French oak, which preserves fruit brightness while adding subtle structure and spice.

On the nose, it is lifted and aromatic, showing blueberry, blackberry, boysenberry, and mulberry, supported by layers of white pepper, mace, nutmeg, wild thyme, and subtle floral notes. With air, deeper tones of dark plum, liquorice, cocoa, and earthy spice begin to emerge.

On the palate, it is medium-bodied, fresh, and energetic, with juicy dark berry fruit framed by fine tannins and bright acidity. The Mataro component adds savoury depth and structure, giving the wine more complexity than its price point suggests.

The finish is long, clean, and gently savoury, with lingering notes of dark fruit, pepper spice, and subtle oak influence. While very approachable in youth, it also has solid short-to-medium term cellaring potential.
