The 2018 Brokenwood ILR Reserve Semillon is one of Australia’s most iconic age-worthy white wines, produced by the highly regarded Brokenwood Wines in the Hunter Valley. Named after former managing director Iain Leslie Riggs (ILR), this flagship Semillon is only released in exceptional vintages and spends extended time maturing in bottle before release, allowing the wine to develop the complexity and character for which Hunter Valley Semillon is renowned.

The 2018 growing season was warm, dry, and remarkably consistent, producing perfectly ripe fruit while retaining the vibrant acidity that defines great Hunter Valley Semillon. Sourced primarily from the celebrated Oakey Creek Vineyard, the wine was fermented entirely in stainless steel with no oak influence, preserving purity, precision, and longevity.

The bouquet is beautifully evolved yet remarkably fresh, revealing aromas of lemon zest, lime leaf, white blossom, and citrus curd, complemented by layers of lanolin, beeswax, chamomile, toast, and brioche. Subtle mineral notes add depth and sophistication.

On the palate, the wine is concentrated, precise, and elegant, displaying flavours of Tahitian lime, preserved lemon, green apple, lemon curd, and citrus peel. Vibrant natural acidity drives the wine forward, while emerging notes of honey, toast, and gentle creaminess provide texture and complexity. The balance between freshness and bottle-aged character is exceptional.

The finish is long, steely, and mineral-driven, lingering with citrus, beeswax, toast, and subtle savoury nuances. Drinking beautifully now, the 2018 ILR Reserve Semillon has the structure and pedigree to continue evolving for another decade or more, developing greater honeyed richness and complexity with age.
