The 2022 Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz is one of Australia’s most iconic red wine blends, produced by Penfolds. Often referred to as the “Baby Grange,” Bin 389 was first created in 1960 by legendary Penfolds winemaker Max Schubert and has become a benchmark expression of the classic Australian Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz blend.

The wine combines the structure and varietal definition of Cabernet Sauvignon with the richness and generosity of Shiraz. Sourced from premium vineyards across South Australia, the 2022 vintage benefited from favourable growing conditions, producing fruit with excellent concentration, balance, and freshness.

A hallmark of Bin 389 is its maturation in barrels previously used for the preceding vintage of Penfolds Grange, contributing additional complexity and pedigree. The wine was matured in a combination of American oak hogsheads, allowing fruit intensity, oak integration, and structural refinement to develop harmoniously.

The bouquet is rich and expressive, offering aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, dark plum, and black cherry, layered with notes of cedar, mocha, vanilla bean, liquorice, and dark chocolate. Additional nuances of spice, tobacco leaf, and subtle earthiness emerge with time in the glass.

On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, powerful, and beautifully balanced. Flavours of cassis, ripe blackberry, plum, and dark berries are supported by fine tannins and integrated oak. Cabernet Sauvignon contributes structure and length, while Shiraz provides richness, texture, and generosity.

The finish is long, polished, and persistent, with lingering notes of dark fruit, cocoa, cedar, spice, and savoury complexity. While highly enjoyable upon release, Bin 389 is renowned for its ageing potential and will continue to evolve gracefully over the next 15–20 years.
