The 2023 Brokenwood Indigo Vineyard Chardonnay is a flagship single-vineyard Chardonnay from Beechworth, Victoria, showcasing Brokenwood’s commitment to producing world-class cool-climate Chardonnay. Sourced from the renowned Indigo Vineyard, this wine highlights the purity, precision, and mineral character that have established Beechworth as one of Australia’s premier Chardonnay regions.

The 2023 vintage experienced a cool, late growing season with above-average rainfall. Careful vineyard management and meticulous hand harvesting ensured pristine fruit quality, while the extended ripening period preserved exceptional natural acidity and aromatic intensity, resulting in a Chardonnay of remarkable elegance and balance.

The fruit is predominantly from the Mendoza clone, whole-bunch pressed and fermented with wild yeasts in French oak, primarily 500L puncheons. Around 30% new French oak is used, with the balance matured in seasoned barrels, creating complexity and texture while allowing the vineyard character to shine.

The bouquet is vibrant and refined, revealing aromas of green pineapple, grapefruit, white nectarine, and citrus blossom, complemented by notes of toasted cashew, roasted almond, gun flint, and subtle French oak. Mineral nuances add further depth and sophistication.

On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, finely textured, and beautifully focused, delivering flavours of grapefruit pith, white nectarine, pear, green apple, and citrus. Bright lime-like acidity provides outstanding drive and freshness, while the creamy texture from barrel fermentation and lees contact creates excellent balance and length.

The finish is long, precise, and mineral-driven, lingering with notes of citrus, stone fruit, toasted nuts, and flinty complexity. Drinking beautifully now, it also possesses the structure to cellar gracefully for 6–10 years, developing greater richness and complexity over time. The wine has received outstanding critical acclaim, including 95 points from Halliday Wine Companion, 95 points from James Suckling, 93 points from Wine Advocate, and 93 points from Vinous.
