The 2021 Yalumba The Virgilius Viognier is one of Australia’s most celebrated white wines and the flagship Viognier from Yalumba. Produced from mature vineyards in the elevated Eden Valley, The Virgilius is widely regarded as Australia’s benchmark Viognier and a world-class expression of this noble Rhône variety.

With more than four decades of experience working with Viognier, Yalumba has established Eden Valley as one of the finest homes for the variety outside France. The 2021 vintage benefited from a mild growing and ripening season following timely spring rainfall, resulting in fruit of exceptional purity, balance, and aromatic intensity.

Handpicked fruit was wild fermented and matured for ten months in mature French oak puncheons, allowing texture and complexity to develop without overwhelming the delicate fruit profile. Much of the blend is sourced from Yalumba’s oldest Viognier vines, originally planted in 1980.

The bouquet is highly aromatic and refined, revealing layers of white flowers, fresh apricot, white peach, honeysuckle, cardamom, white pepper, and fresh ginger. Subtle notes of almond meal, spice, and mineral complexity add further intrigue.

On the palate, the wine is rich yet remarkably poised. Flavours of apricot, peach, ginger spice, citrus, and almond savouriness are supported by a signature Viognier texture and vibrant natural acidity. A distinctive mineral and sourdough-like character adds depth and sophistication, while maintaining freshness and precision.

The finish is long, textured, and elegant, lingering with notes of stone fruit, spice, almond, and mineral freshness. While captivating in its youth, The Virgilius rewards careful cellaring and will continue to gain complexity over the next 8–15 years.
